Fat Free and Sugar Free Food is not Calorie Free

Always fat free, red vines are a favorite food group of mine, especially at trade shows. Sugar free vines were going to solve a lot of mindless eating problems.

I searched the aisles of  Safeway, CVS, and Walgreens for this candy  and determined it is not available in Marin County. Just as well, as it turns out fat free, sugar free vines are not a solution to guilt free eating.

The folks at LiveStrong.com made a study of licorice. Their site shows sugar free strawberry red vines have 90 calories in a serving size of 7 vines. So neither "fat free" nor "sugar free" means calories free.

The FDA says:  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned about the number of products we have seen that contain claims regarding the absence of sugar, such as, "sugar free" but that fail to bear the required disclaimer statement when these foods are not "low" or "reduced in" calories or fail to bear the required disclaimer statement in the location or with the conspicuousness required by regulation.

So why do fat free and sugar free candies contain calories?  Because they contain sugar alcohols which are carbohydrates manufactured from sugars and starches. Carbohydrates do have fewer calories per gram than fat and sugar. However, since flavor and sweetness decline when fat and sugar are removed, often more sugar alcohols are needed for the product to taste good.

The Nutrition Label on LiveStrong for fat free, sugar free Strawberry Vines states that 96.2% of the 90 calories per serving come from carbohydrates. The label does not call these carbohydrates sugar alcohols.  It states there are 0g of sugar and 0g of fat in a serving of 7 vines.

If you can just eat the serving size of 7 vines, then the packaging is accurate and red vines enter the functional food category discussed in a previous blog.  Sticking to red snacks, a medium size apples is only 80 calories.   For better nutrition, choose the apple.

I will look forward to comments about this post.
