Pliny the Elder talked about taking salt as an antidote to poison. Hence the phrase "take it with a grain of salt." Pliny’s Naturalis Historia, 77 A.D.
Today salt is so ubiquitous in the American diet that the proverbial grain has become the poison. Most people consume twice as much sodium than the daily recommended limit.
