The USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion strongly suggests that Americans eat foods that are nutrient dense. Simply put, these foods are high in nutrients and low in calories from added fats, sugars, starches or sodium. They are pure, undiluted foods.
The choices are endless: "All vegetables, fruits, whole grains, seafood, eggs, beans and peas, unsalted nuts and seeds, fat-free and low-fat milk and milk products, and lean meats and poultry are nutrient dense foods." USDA page 5.
The key is preparation. Hone your steaming, poaching, broiling, braising, and grilling techniques. Advanced culinary skills are not required, but many cookbooks and cooking tools are available to make you an expert.
To underscore my point, fast foods, processed foods, and fried foods are not nutrient dense. Build healthy eating patterns by removing these foods from your diet.
