The Japanese are known for their longevity because they consume more fish, more soy, more wheat and buckwheat flour, and more oolong tea. Traditional Japanese meals have small portions. You may occasionally go out for sushi, but that's an adventure for you and not your diet.
Our "American" diet is problematic because it relies on fast foods and processed foods. Pizzas, burgers, burritos, and yogurt with candy toppings are starting to define us. Sodium, sugars, starches, and transfats add too many calories and not enough nutrients to our daily diet. We should be eating nutrient dense foods which are high in nutrients and low in calories.
As a culture, we need to do a 180 and reverse our eating habits. Taste and family meals need to override convenience and speed. I realize that not everyone has time to devote to shopping, chopping, and clean-up. I would include myself. But at least some meals during the week should be prepared with fresh, healthy ingredients and eaten with friends and family at home.
Think about changing your diet one meal at a time.

I believe that people should start realizing that instead of diet they should really focus on switching their metabolism in order to burn fat (so called ketosis).
It might take sometime (at least 3 months) but once you have achieve it the whole process of losing weight (and being healthier) becomes much easier.
