Time Magazine's 50 Healthiest Foods
Time Magazine has done a fantastic job of listing the top 50 healthiest foods, why they are good for you, and how to prepare them. To make this long list a little easier to digest, I have itemized it by food groups.
Fruits: Bananas, raspberries, oranges, kiwis, pomegranates, blueberries, grapefruit, tangerines, avocados, tomatoes
Vegetables: Eggplant, Swiss chard, mushrooms, kale, broccoli sprouts, fennel, garlic, sweet potatoes, beets, spinach, cauliflower, collard greens, onions, winter squash
Seafood: Tuna, sardines, anchovies, salmon
Meat: Dark meat poultry
Grains and seeds: Whole wheat bread, quinoa, hemp seeds, rolled oats, kamut, lentils, farro, chia seeds, flax seeds
Nuts: Walnuts, almonds
Dairy: Eggs, Kefir, Greek yogurt
Oils and spices: Coconut oil, olive oil, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon
Drinks: Rooibos (roy-bus) red tea, red wine. This is now my favorite tea, replacing the black tea I usually drink. I like it hot, cold, with lemon and straight up. The Freshpak brand gives you 160 teabags for $15.49, so less than 10 cents a bag.
Looking for a common denominator? If your Mother said "eat your vegetables" she was right. Fourteen percent of Time's top 50 healthiest foods are vegetables, followed by fruit and grains.
Of course there are other popular lists which include lean meats, seafood, cheese and chocolate. The choice is yours. Choose wisely.
