The New Food Rules (according to TIME 12/28/15)

I always love it when Time magazine writes my blog for me, or to give credit where due, Michael Pollan.

The Time magazine article I read today says a "simpler saner way to eat is here." The thing is, it's been here. Michael Pollan's book In Defense of Food, published in 2008, says "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." on page 1.  More can be found in the 2 hour PBS 2015 documentary of the same name. As early as 1570, the Mannerist painter Guiseppe Arcimboldo showed us the same thing. Not much is really new.

The simple question, what's for dinner has been complicated by the food industry and government. The food industry has created functional foods with "healthy" additives and the government has redefined processed foods to put Twinkies and frozen vegetables in the same category.

If a food needs to be labeled, then it must be processed otherwise you would know exactly what it was by looking at it.  To avoid food additives, Michael Pollan suggests that you stay at the shortest end of the food chain, farm to table.

A companion piece to the previously referenced Time article called "Put An Egg on It" p.149, suggests that some  food combinations can enhance the body's absorption of nutrients. For example, turmeric is absorbed better when paired with pepper and tomatoes and broccoli have stronger anticancer effects when eaten together. Other combinations that aided absorption of  nutrients or reduced inflammation were eggs on top of salad, avocados on top of burgers, green tea with lemon, and spinach with orange.

Really there's not much new when it comes to food.  Newness is all in the preparation.  Learn to cook!
